MapWindow 4 is a free windows GIS application and uses an ActiveX control at it's core that can be embedded into many applications that don't support .Net such as excel, access, visual basic 6, or other pre-.Net languages.

MapWindow 6 is based on the history of MapWindow 4, but is a completely new code base written entirely in the C# programming language. All of the features and functions of MapWindow 6 come from our DotSpatial programming libraries. Not every feature or function in MapWindow 4 has been implemented in DotSpatial and MapWindow 6, hence both projects are released simultaneously for different users and needs.
